If your driver\u2019s license was issued on Ascension Island, you should not assume that you can legally drive in Japan. In most cases, an Ascension Island driver\u2019s license or Ascension Island issued International Driving Permit is not accepted for driving or renting a campervan in Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the United Kingdom is connected with the 1949 Geneva Convention, that does not automatically make every British territory license valid in Japan. The United Nations treaty record lists specific territorial applications for the United Kingdom, including places such as Isle of Man, Guernsey, Jersey, Gibraltar, Seychelles, Uganda, Hong Kong and others, but Ascension Island is not shown in that listed territorial application section.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because of this, travelers with an Ascension Island issued license should treat their documents as not valid for driving in Japan unless a Japanese authority or rental company confirms otherwise in writing before travel.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Japanese Translation Does Not Solve This Issue<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Some travelers think they can simply translate their foreign license into Japanese and use it in Japan. That is not how Japan\u2019s system works.<\/span><\/p>\n

IDPs under other conventions or unofficial formats are not accepted.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Private online certificates, digital license cards and unofficial translation documents cannot replace a valid driving permit in Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n
