A Colombia-issued International Driving Permit should also not be relied on for Japan unless it is issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, which is the IDP system Japan accepts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japan\u2019s official rule is narrow. Foreign drivers must hold a Japanese driver\u2019s license, a valid International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention, or a recognized foreign license with an official Japanese translation from specific approved countries and regions. Colombia is not part of Japan\u2019s translation-based exception list.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Core Issue: Japan and Colombia Do Not Match Under the Accepted IDP Rule<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japan accepts International Driving Permits only when they are issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention and follow the required format. The United Nations treaty record for the 1949 Convention lists the contracting parties to that convention. Colombia is not shown as a contracting party in that accepted 1949 framework.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of this, a Colombia-issued license or IDP should be treated as not valid for driving in Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why an \u201cInternational Permit\u201d May Still Fail in Japan<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the trap. Colombia is not included.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What Colombian Travelers Should Do Before Booking a Rental Vehicle<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your license was issued in Colombia, do not book a rental car, campervan, or motorhome in Japan assuming your documents will be accepted. The rental company may refuse the vehicle at pickup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not a small paperwork issue. Driving without valid documents in Japan can create legal problems and may affect insurance coverage if an accident happens.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Could Colombia Become Eligible Later?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, but only if the legal framework changes.
