Can You Drive in Japan with an Andorran Driver’s License?
Travelers with an Andorran driver’s license should not assume they are allowed to drive in Japan. Japan has strict rules for foreign drivers, and the required documents depend on the country or region where the license was issued, not the driver’s nationality.
According to Japan’s National Police Agency, foreign visitors can legally drive in Japan only with one of the accepted license documents: a Japanese driver’s license, a valid International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, or a foreign license with an official Japanese translation where Japan specifically allows that route.
At this time, an Andorran driver’s license is not listed among the foreign licenses that can be used in Japan with a Japanese translation. Japan’s translation-based exception is mainly available for licenses issued in countries or regions such as Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco, and Taiwan.
This means travelers holding an Andorran license may face problems when renting or driving a campervan in Japan. Even if an International Driving Permit issued in Andorra appears to mention Japan, Japanese authorities and rental companies may not accept it unless it fully meets Japan’s recognized 1949 Geneva Convention requirements. Japan does not accept IDPs issued under other conventions, including the 1968 Vienna Convention.
For this reason, drivers with an Andorran license should confirm their eligibility directly with the relevant Japanese authority, their rental company, or a prefectural driver’s license center before making a campervan booking. If the documents are not accepted at pickup, the rental company cannot legally release the vehicle.
Important Warning About Online “International Licenses”
Be careful with websites selling unofficial “international driver’s licenses.” These documents may look official, but they are not the same as a valid International Driving Permit issued by an authorized government body or approved automobile association. If the permit is not legally recognized in Japan, it cannot be used to drive or rent a campervan.
Before Booking a Campervan in Japan
If your license was issued in Andorra, confirm your driving eligibility before arrival. Japan’s road laws are strict, and carrying the wrong document can lead to rental rejection, fines, or legal issues.
