Summary

Name:

Bermuda

Note:

Unfortunately the driver's license and international driving permit (IDP) issued in Bermuda is not valid to drive in Japan.

Can Bermuda License Holders Drive in Japan?

No. A driver’s license issued in Bermuda is not valid for driving in Japan, and an International Driving Permit issued in Bermuda should not be treated as valid for Japan unless Bermuda becomes covered under the 1949 Geneva Convention in the future.

Japan has strict rules for foreign drivers. The decision is not based on the traveler’s nationality or passport. It depends on where the driver’s license was issued and whether that issuing country or territory is recognized under Japan’s accepted driving permit rules.

Why Bermuda Licenses Are Not Accepted in Japan

Japan recognizes International Driving Permits only when they are issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic and follow the correct convention format. International Driving Permits issued by countries or regions that are not contracting parties to the Geneva Convention are not valid for driving in Japan.

Bermuda has stated that it is not a signatory to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. Because of this, a Bermuda-issued driving license or IDP does not meet Japan’s recognized permit requirements.

Important Warning About Bermuda IDPs

Some International Driving Permits may look similar to the 1949 Geneva Convention format. They may even mention Japan or the Geneva Convention inside the document. However, this does not automatically make the permit valid in Japan.

For Japan, the key issue is not only the appearance of the document. The permit must be issued by a country or region covered by the 1949 Geneva Convention and must follow the required format. If the issuing country or territory is not recognized under that convention, the permit can be rejected in Japan.

Is There Any Separate Driving Agreement Between Japan and Bermuda?

At this time, Bermuda does not have a separate driving agreement with Japan that allows Bermuda license holders to drive using only a Bermuda license or a Japanese translation.

Japan does allow some foreign license holders to drive with an official Japanese translation, but this exception applies only to specific countries and regions listed by Japanese authorities, such as Belgium, France, Germany, Monaco, Switzerland, and Taiwan. Bermuda is not included in that listed exception.

What Bermuda Travelers Should Confirm Before Renting in Japan

If your license was issued in Bermuda, do not assume you can rent or drive a car, campervan, or motorhome in Japan with your Bermuda license or Bermuda-issued IDP.

Before making a booking, contact the rental company and confirm your license status. If you cannot provide a Japan-recognized license document, you should not drive in Japan because this can create legal, rental, and insurance problems.

Avoid Fake Online IDPs for Bermuda Travelers

Be careful with websites selling “international driver’s licenses” online. Many of these documents are unofficial and are not accepted in Japan. A valid permit for Japan must meet Japan’s legal requirements, not just look like an international driving document.

If Bermuda becomes covered under the 1949 Geneva Convention in the future, then a properly issued Bermuda IDP may become valid in Japan. Until then, Bermuda-issued licenses and IDPs should be treated as not valid for driving in Japan.
